Christopher is more than a headline. He is a devoted father of five children, including a set of twins, and a man deeply committed to his family. The very next day, Christopher was supposed to be fitted for his graduation gown as he prepared to celebrate earning his associate’s degree, a milestone he worked hard to achieve for himself and for his children. Let that sink in. A hospital should be the safest place you can go in a medical emergency, not a place where you risk being shot while waiting in the emergency room. Yesterday was a day full of deep emotion. Alongsi Yesterday was a day full of deep emotion. Alongside Pamela Bonslater, the mother of Elijah Wilks, I viewed the video capturing the final moments of her son’s life. Words can hardly express the pain of that experience. From the beginning, there have been conflicting narratives surrounding this tragic incident — narratives that have understandably divided our community. After carefully reviewing the evidence, we publicly acknowledged during our press conference that we believe the officer-involved shooting was justified and consistent with his training. This family made a courageous decision to lead by example — to choose accountability over anger, truth over speculation, and healing over division. It is our hope that this moment can help set a new standard for transparency and responsibility in our city. We are deeply thankful to Chief Jeffrey Norman, the City of Milwaukee, Tory Lowe, Vaun Mayes, and all the dedicated advocates who fought to implement the new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) requiring that videos from officer-involved shootings be made available to the families within 48 hours and released to the public within 15 days. This policy represents progress — and yesterday, that progress was put into practice. While the Wilks family is heartbroken, they have chosen not to make excuses, but to take accountability for their loved one’s actions. It is my ardent desire that the same level of accountability be expected when law enforcement is in the wrong. True justice requires consistency — not convenience. We extend our gratitude to the all officials involved for their empathy, professionalism, and respect throughout this process. We also lift up the off-duty officer and his family in prayer as they navigate this emotional time as well. When the video is released publicly, we ask that the community approach it with sensitivity and compassion — not judgment — as this family continues to grieve an unimaginable loss. Caught on video, the dog clamped onto her ankle while she lay on the ground, and the handler failed to regain control. She is now undergoing medical treatment and experiencing complications.
